What is the Sustainable Packaging Solution for Indian Thali ?
Indian Thali
India has a rich heritage of food and cuisine. The diverse states of India offer a vibrant and distinct range of ingredients and recipes that are rich in colour, taste, and bustling with nutrients. Regardless of the variety of foods, coming from different parts of the country, one common custom that prevails is the ‘Thali’ culture. Thali is a traditional plate, with varieties of dishes, accompanied by yogurt, pickles, and spices. The Indian Thali is the perfect meal with many nutritional benefits.
Thali is served and eaten at festivals as part of social gatherings. Depending on where you are eating in India, the plate on which the food is served can range from a simple banana leaf to a silver platter.
A North Indian Thali typically has rice, chapati and lentils in adequate proportions. Nowadays, takeaway places and restaurants also add a small portion of sweet, such as Gulab Jamun, Kheer, Halwa and yogurt.
The spices and herbs used, such as black pepper, ginger, garlic, cumin, cloves, mint, curry leaves, not only provide flavour, but also help to boost immunity levels and keep the health status in order.
My Thali Story
I, Gaurav Khattar, was heavily dependent on Thali in my quest of eating healthy food, during my initial working years. I worked in shift duty while at Vadodara in a Petrochemical complex. The second shift used to get over by 22.00 hrs, and by the time I was back to the township, it was pretty late. Being a bachelor, I had a bare minimum cooking facilities at home. Therefore, I used to visit a tiny restaurant inside the campus which also used to wind up by the same time.
As I was a regular visitor to this restaurant takeout, the owner used to offer me Thali at a discounted price. Instead of throwing away the extra curry and vegetable dishes, he used to offer them to me as a part of discounted Thali bonanza. I was pleased, as every day, I got a variety in my meals at a lower price. Additionally, it was a comparatively healthier alternative to junk food. For two years during my stay at Vadodara, Thali was a staple diet, a saviour for me, and a few other bachelors.
