Celebrate World Ocean Day by Reinvigorating our Blue Waters
The World Oceans Day is a day to honour the world’s oceans and their offerings. The occasion is celebrated every year. This day offers an opportunity to participate in protecting our future personally through a new mindset, as well as community, action, and involvement in providing beach clean-ups, educational programs, art contests, film festivals, sustainable seafood events, and other planned activities to help raise awareness of how our lives are dependent on the oceans.
Plastic pollution in our oceans
Plastic pollution’s global threats to the oceans, wildlife, and future human health can no longer be ignored. To address the issue, a variety of strategies are required, such as developing more circular economies, limiting the use of single-use plastics, improving the re-use and recyclability of plastic products, and finding an alternative to plastic that is environmentally friendly.
The 2022 theme for World Ocean Day is Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean. Basically, it emphasizes communities, ideas, and solutions that are coming together to safeguard and reinvigorate the ocean and everything it holds.
Plastic debris has been the most abundant type of litter in the ocean, accounting for most of all marine debris discovered from surface waters to deep-sea sediments. Plastic is found on every continent’s seashore, with more plastic waste located near popular tourist destinations and densely populated areas.
A trip to Chennai, India
I recently went to Chennai, one of India’s most vibrant and densely populated coastal cities, located next to the rough Bay of Bengal on the Eastern side of the country. One fine morning, I decided to go to Chennai’s most famous Marina Beach and try my hands on photography by clicking sunrise. The breeze was cool, the traffic was thin, my mood was jolly, and the weather was salubrious. Slowly, the sun creeped out from behind the clouds, and the streaks of sunlight caressed my face. Nature is so charming despite us being cruel to it.
I thoroughly enjoyed taking pics of an exquisite sunrise when I saw the waves returning a beer bottle to the shore. Unfortunately, the next wave brought plastic bags, cigarette packs, empty wrappers, plastic bowls, and other trash. Not only does this pollutes the ocean, but it also provides a shameful backdrop to otherwise beautiful scenery all around.

Let’s save our oceans
The World Ocean Day is a perfect opportunity to tackle issues associated with plastic pollution as an individual, as a community, and as humankind, that impact our oceans. The objective of this event is to protect our oceans, its ecosystems, and biodiversity, as well as to build resilience to climate change.
